“TAKING RTI TO THE NEXT LEVEL”

RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION: DIAGNOSING THE LEARNING ENABLED
Administrator Academy #651

Date and Time: July 14, 2008; 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Location: WCISEC Office; 1st floor conference room Macomb, Il 61455
Presenter: Dr. David Tilly

We live in an era of unprecedented change in education with general education being overtaken by “no Child Left Behind,” accountability. Demands seem to be everywhere, and we now have IDEA 2004 with a new series of provisions. What does it all mean? The answer is: It depends on what we make of it. Most of the opportunities we now find ourselves with are the culmination of a 30-year history in education. Being proactive in our response to this evolution is critical to schools and students in meeting the increasing demands. For us to be successful, our past cannot be our future. The Response to Intervention provision in IDEA 2004 for assessing and supporting students with learning problems represents a great opportunity for improving our educational practices. Our presenter, Dr. David Tilly of Iowa’s Heartland Area Education Agency, is on of the nation’s foremost authorities on RTI, data-based decision making, educational problem-solving, and alternative systems for delivering special education services. By attending this workshop you will be much better equipped to effectively plan for implementing RTI in your school.

OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

  1. Be able to identify essential early intervening services with at least 3 tiers of intervention.
  2. Be able to identify the essential features of the Universal Screening tool.
  3. Be able to select appropriate interventions based on key principals.
  4. Be able to use a blueprint for implementation of a RTI problem solving system that includes consensus building.
  5. Develop a plan for implementation in their building/district, using ideas from the workshop.

Participants desiring Administrator Academy credit will need to choose and develop one of four action plans for use at their school/district:

  1. Assessing results of Core Instruction at “my School”,
  2. Describe planned configuration of RTI implementation at “my School”,
  3. Survey staff for professional development needs to implement RTI, or
  4. Select appropriate measures of implementation of at least two classroom interventions.
